Visakhapatnam, April 10, 2024: As summer tightens its grip, Andhra Pradesh braces for hot and humid weather conditions across its districts, with a potential heatwave looming on Tuesday.

IMD Predictions

The Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Amaravati center has issued warnings of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in isolated places over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) and Yanam. Similar weather patterns are anticipated over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rainfall Expectations

While North Coast Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may witness light to moderate rain or thundershowers at one or two places, along with thunderstorms, gusty winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour are also expected. In South Coast Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, dry weather is expected, albeit with hot and humid conditions in isolated places.

Heatwave Alerts

According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), a heatwave is expected to impact 39 mandals on Tuesday, including areas in ASR, Parvathipuram Manyam, Srikakulam, and Vizianagaram districts. The severity of the heatwave was already felt in one mandal in Annamayya district on Monday, with 36 other mandals recording heatwaves.

Government Response

In response to the challenging weather conditions, Chief Secretary KS Jawahar Reddy has directed officials to monitor drinking water distribution using drones to prevent water pilferage. Water releases from Prakasam Barrage and Nagarjuna Sagar Project are underway to fill summer storage tanks, with special emphasis placed on uninterrupted distribution until the water release is halted. Officials have been instructed to monitor water levels in storage tanks and canals closely.

Additionally, the Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of providing employment opportunities to job card holders through the MGNREGS scheme. He urged officials to expedite the approval of new works under MGNREGS to stimulate employment generation across the state.

As Andhra Pradesh grapples with the onset of summer and the challenges it brings, proactive measures by the government and vigilant monitoring of weather conditions are crucial to ensure the well-being of residents and mitigate the impact of adverse weather events. With heatwave alerts in place and preparations underway, the state remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard its citizens during the summer months.
