In an effort to alleviate the persistent parking woes in Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced the development of a state-of-the-art multilevel parking facility near KBR Park. This initiative aims to address the acute shortage of parking space in the bustling area, which sees a high demand for vehicle accommodation.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 3 crore, will cover an area of 405 square meters and offer dedicated parking spaces for both cars and motorcycles. Specifically, 20% of the total capacity, equivalent to 72 Equivalent Car Spaces (ECS), will be reserved for two-wheelers. This facility will operate from 5 am to 11 pm, ensuring ample accessibility for the public.
To bring this project to fruition, GHMC has invited proposals under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with a lease term of ten years that includes the construction period. This approach aims to leverage private sector efficiency and investment while ensuring public oversight and benefit.
In addition to the KBR Park project, GHMC plans to roll out at least 50 similar parking projects across Hyderabad. This expansive initiative is based on a comprehensive assessment conducted by the Director of the Center for Energy, Environment, Urban Governance, and Infrastructure Development at the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI).
Safety and security are paramount in the new facility, which will be equipped with CCTV cameras and adequate lighting. To minimize the human factor and enhance efficiency, the parking system will feature automated ticketing machines and smart card transactions. Furthermore, a dedicated mobile app will help users navigate the facility, book parking in advance, and access other services. Regular monitoring will ensure that digital services remain smooth and glitch-free.
Additionally, another similar project is underway near the Nampally metro station. Developed by Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) on a half-acre plot, this facility will include ten parking floors and five commercial floors, encompassing a total built-up area of approximately 1,44,400 square feet. With 68% of this space dedicated to parking 250 four-wheelers and 200 two-wheelers, the remaining 32% will be utilized for commercial purposes, including shops and a two-screen movie theater.
These developments signal a significant improvement in urban infrastructure, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and providing efficient parking solutions to Hyderabad’s residents.
